Almost Done!

December 11, Tuesday 1:24pm

Okay so I'm almost done for the whole semester. I'm just waiting for my files to be converted.... and it makes me kinda sad!! But as much fun as I had during this class I know that I'm going to have just as much fun bullying my way into animating stories. I hate being the first person on the waiting list. Seriously. Anyways! I am going to miss you so much :((( I should come bother you! (and Matt Murphy). Anyways my eval is done and now I'm just waiting so I'm wasting your time with typing... so after I start/finish my drawing final I am going to go back and make my animation final all beautiful. And then you will see it because you are on my panel!! Anyways... yeah I'm done now :)

Final Project

December 6, Tuesday 2:14pm

I think I might have some time this weekend so I'm not sure if I'm going to go back into the animation or not. I think I just want to fix some glitches and try to figure out the music. I would like to credit whoever played the guitar part from youtube also but I would mostly like to fix all of the problems that I think could be solved in a couple hours. I feel like I've had a  difficult time being motivated. I know it sounds weird but I feel like I just need a break from this project for a couple days and then try to work out the kinks. Also I have a mountain of homework that needs to get done plus studying. I feel like all I do is complain on this blog.... But I love this class! :) And for the most part the presentation of my final project went better than I expected so I feel really happy. I beat myself up over the small glitches more than I should.

Update- Final

December 5, 11:35pm

Alright so I've worked a lot on this project and it's almost done. I'm going to finish it in the morning. I didn't have time to do everything I wanted to do but I think it will look great when I finish it tomorrow morning. I'm going to get up early and work on it until it's done. I've only missed one art history I believe so if it must be done then it must be done. I'm going to work on it for thirty more minutes or so. I would try and tell you how many hours went into this, but I'm really not sure how many. It was a lot though I can tell you that.

Update 12/2- Final

December 2, Sunday 6:12pm

I worked on my animation on Friday, and some more this afternoon. I'm going to continue working. I have a bout one thousand frames left, but it's all relatively easy stuff. Then I'm going to go back and draw the features in. I don't expect it to take that long. I do have two drawings due for drawing that need to be worked on and two papers that need to be typed up, but I'm still plugging away at a decent pace. So instead of continuing to talk about it, I'll just go back to working on it.

Update: Final Project 11/29

November 29, Thursday 2:49pm

Alright so I'm at the part with the cheeks in my animation, which is about 1600 frames. I have to do the hair and the pupils and I think that's all I'll have to do. So I'm animating all the tools in first and then I'm doing the features on separate layers. I know it's a lot of work but I'm about halfway for the first part and the second part isn't nearly so many frames, so I'm not too worried. I'm going to go home, clean my room, take a little nap, and then get back to work on this! And I will blog back. Hopefully I won't be sick again so I'll be able to work a lot this weekend. I have high hopes for this though!!

Computer troubles again

November 29, Thursday 12:45pm

I am having computer problems again. These machines hate me I am convinced. Thank you for finding my flashdrive though! I really appreciate it!! But yeah, so flash won't open for me and the server won't connect. Now that I have my flashdrive I have a copy of the obstacle animation that I seemed to have forgotten to turn in but I can't connect so I'll be putting it on later. And if I don't get my problem fixed I'm either going to try switching computers or go home and get my laptop so I can keep working on my animation. Computers frustrate me.... I almost wish I had picked a dreadful walk cycle so I could just use paper.

My Plans Are Always Ruined...

November 29, Thursday 12:28pm

Well I was going to work on my animation last night but the following thing happened: I was so sick that I couldn't get out of bed without the fear of vomiting. A lot. So I slept for the whole day, didn't go to any classes, and woke up at 6pm. I them attempted to eat something. Long story short, bad idea. So no animation was done last night. So I will be working obsessively this weekend and today during class and after class today and tomorrow. It will get done or so help me! Anyways I feel like around 600 frames isn't so bad all things considering. Just 3000 more to go. Or something like that. Well I'm off to animate!

Update for Final Project 11/27

November 27, Tuesday 2:48pm

So I'm now at 600 frames, which I personally think is awesome. I'm just animating in all of the tools first, with the body in place. They I'm going to go back in and draw all of the lines that the tools make, so all of my features. I feel like I'm further than I thought I would be, although I didn't work on the weekend like I said I would. I may do some more of the tool animating  tonight, which is just going to be a lot of copy and pasting, but it's still going to be fun anyways. I'd like to get most of that done by Thursday, probably working a lot tomorrow night and some maybe in the morning tomorrow. If I don't procrastinate my drawing homework until then! But I will be working on this tomorrow night since it will be the only thing I have to work on. But 600 frames out of about 3500 in less than three hours seems pretty amazing to me. And I'll work on it a lot tomorrow night so I might even have the same amount done, so then 1200 will be done. I also said that I would buy a flashdrive but I forgot so I'm going to have to order one. It totally slipped my mind while I was out. Anyways, I think I'm in great shape for right now since most of it is luckily simplistic.

Shelby out!!

Whatever day today is!!

November 27, Tuesday 12:50pm

Having computer trouble again but at least I can blog about it. So I'm waiting for it to reboot. I have 260 frames right now. I said I was going to work on it over the vacation but I didn't!! No shame! I needed the sleep and I still kind of do. I haven't been feeling well. But when I get to my portrait for drawing I'm going to work on this more. Now back to work!!

Presentation of the day!

November 20, Tuesday 2:55pm

I thought the presentation was very interesting, because I think using real dancers is really fascinating. It actually makes me want to do something like that but with martial artists. So now I'm all inspired but I probably won't be able to do anything with it yet. But I thought the way they combined dancing and animation was really amazing and I would really like to do something like that.

Final Project: Update

November 20, Tuesday 2:47pm

Alright so I shot my video and imported it into flash AND emailed it to myself. So I will start working on it when I get home tonight from the car ride, probably after dinner. I might shoot it again, but I haven't decided yet. It's really long frame wise, and it's going to be a lot of work but I'm really looking forward to all the time. I'm going to start it tonight and work on it obsessively, and many of the opening frames are going to be the same since I'm not moving. I think the actual video is almost two minutes, and that makes me a little nervous but I'm not really feeling too worried about it, since I normally put every else off for animation. And my little sister really likes watching me animate, so it will be a fun time for us. She already knows when to click like on the songs I like on Pandora. I have a little trained animation assistant in the wings ready with my drink and song choices. :) Have a happy Thanksgiving!!

Final Project:Converting Video

November 20, Tuesday 1:30-?

Alright so I'm converting the video I made after my test video right now, which apparently is going to take about twenty minutes. So I'm going to email the video to myself. So for the last 30 minutes I will be working on rotoscoping, except now I'm going to listen to a presentation. Scratch that. I will be emailing the video to myself, and other thing I just did.

Obstacle

November 20, Tuesday 12:26pm

I somehow didn't turn in my obstacle animation and I can't find my flash drive so I will be turning that in when we get back probably... I have no idea how that happened. I turned all my makeup work in awhile ago... I'll look for it and turn it in. Sorry about that!!! I think it might be on the other computer because Cierra made me switch a couple of times...

Final project/fancy walkcycle

November 20, Tuesday 9:17am

Fancy Walkcycle- I kind of hate it. I wish I could have spent more time on it, but other classes unfortunately got priority this time. I'm glad that I put a cool head on the body but I wish I could have gone back in and made the body by the same style as the head.

Final Project: I really want to do a rotoscope with makeup. I was thinking of having some rubbing away motions and some of my face come through, but I'm not sure yet. I'm going to storyboards it out on my break between classes today and then bring my makeup to class with me so I can figure out what I want to do. I have really awesome pink hair now so I feel like I want to incorporate it.

Walk Cycles

November 13, Tuesday 2:54pm

I think my stick figure walk cycle came out alright. I might decide to do another one. I will work on my character design block so I can do the more expressive walk cycle. I really like to do cutesy things so I might do another cute character again or a really creepy one. I like polar opposites for some reason. Anyway I think my two simple walk cycles are fine for now, but I might do a third just to cement it in my brain.

Also my thoughts on Tess's presentation:
I love the Lion King, so I thought it was really interesting to see how they came up with the characters and how they infused human features into animals. Scar has always been my favorite because of all the things they said in the video and I think all the work they did with real lions and watching documentaries is just beautiful and that's the way animation should be done because it really is art. Also I grew up near someone who owned a lion for a pet. Her name was Lisa and she liked pancakes and though I was her cub.

Homework stuff

November 13, Tuesday 12:28pm

Alright so I looked over the reading, since I've read it previously last year. I feel like it's not as easy to do as they make it seem. Because every time I do it I always mess up somehow so I'm happy I'm going to have a teacher go over it... Anyways. I put all of the sound into the stop motion this morning, since it only took about five minutes of my time. It wasn't a big deal at all. I didn't put a title screen on it because I didn't know what we would want to name it. I also only did one of the sketches, the one that was featureless. I feel like I'm having character design block recently, so I'll try to think of one today.

In summation: Contact, recoil, passing and highpoint are important concepts that I have yet to grasp. The stop motion is pretty much done even though it's only 8 seconds. And I have character design block. Tada!

Presentations

November 8, Thursday 2:54pm

Cierra's presentation: I feel like explaining how cel animation turned into digital animation is very interesting and I think the facts were presented well, and the video helped with the visuals. I do think it's very similar to Derrick's presentation, but all of the information was very helpful

Dan's presentation: I felt like his was a little long, but I got all of the information about the "acting". I feel like the differences between exaggeration and subtle were very clear.

Group Stop Motion

November 8, Thursday 2:50pm

I feel like the project came together in an alright manner, but it's really difficult to work with people who said from the beginning that they don't like working with people. I'm going to try really hard not to rant about it but animation is a collaborative art form, so it's really important that people do work together. I feel like in every project someone does more than someone else, but I don't really mind. I mean, I just kind of have a bossy personality, I really like to take charge. I don't feel like I can get really excited about a project until I work with people who are really excited to work on the project. I understand some people have less people skills than others but it doesn't make it any less frustrating. I'm really not trying to rant but it's just kind of happening.

Well anyways, I plan on fixing it all up when I get home today. I'm going to edit the sounds in and such and then make sure it's all nice and working. I even want to kind of make it a little bit longer, but I'm not sure. I'm sure I'll be able to get a look at it tonight. Also Saturday is my birthday :) So yeah, happy birthday to me?

Rotoscoping

November 5, Monday 7-8pm(Sunday) and 8-9pm Monday

Alright so I worked on the rotoscoping for another two hours and I only got to three seconds out of nine. This stuff is so hard! I'm going to call it quits because I have an art history test tomorrow.

I like this stop motion. I'm also going to post my stop motion from last year.

Class today!

November 1, Thursday 3:01pm

My presentation is awesome. Because Glen Keane is awesome. His work speaks for itself. :)

I feel like I'm really slow when it comes to rotoscoping but it turns out looking very nice so I'm looking forward to working on it this weekend, probably starting tonight, with breaks for art history and food of course.

I've also done stop motion before so I have many great ideas in my opinion Stop motion is so much fun!

Derrick's Presentation

November 1, Thursday 2:37pm

I thought the video he showed was the most amazing thing I've ever seen! Call me a little crazy but I wouldn't mind trying to work with all those chemicals and the crazy backgrounds that are water color. I think it's amazing that all that effort was made to make an animated movie but I really want to try it. I would really love to try it. I thought that cel animation was the most interesting thing I had ever seen and I think the process would be really fun. I have no idea where to get transparencies like that anymore though. But all the hours and hours that went into the creation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is so amazing. I kind of want to be a slave driver boss just like that.

Elijah's Presentation

November 1, 2:33pm Thursday

I thought Elijah's presentation was very interesting. I think it's very odd to recycle animation movements, especially when Disney didn't have any kind of technology that would make that easier back in the day of pencil and paper. I think it's a really good idea to save time, but also that it's a little unoriginal now that I think about it. I had never heard about it before because when I think of new projects or movies I personally think Disney should do I never really imagine the dance sequences being the same. I think it kind of defeats the purpose almost. I know that animators are all for saving time but I also like the artistic qualities that go into an animation. I thought the presentation was very interesting though. I understand the differences between recycled and not, but I do think that they are very similar it's only a matter of who stole it.

Mid-term

November 1, Thursday 2:20pm

I keep forgetting to update.. I'm really trying to remember. Truly! Anyways I worked on my midterm four hours last night from 6-12. Then I worked on it this morning from 7-10 and then from 11:30-11:55. I'm really proud of it even though the color was exhausting. I'm also happy I decided to use my own sounds that I recorded my sister doing. Very happy with that. I'm really glad I did it in color even though it added more than 10 hours onto my work time, I think it looks a lot better now and I'm glad I did it. I also learned faster ways to make that color work.

I also have a really good idea for the rotoscoping project but I think I'm going to keep it to myself for now because I love surprises. I like the exercise but I've had an idea for a long time that I really want to try. So I'll try to remember to blog about that.

I also forgot to post about the other people's presentations because I forgot. No excuse other than my scatter brained-ness. So I'm going to write some posts about those right now.

The coloring process!

October 25, Thursday 2:56pm

Alright so I'm on frame 285 of coloring. I finally got the bucket tool to work and it seems to not be freezing up anymore. Hopefully when I finish it at home this weekend it won't hate my computer. I hate that it's difficult to do any kind of value/ blending on flash. I'm going to keep looking online because I really hate the color quality. I really like having values in my work so if I figure out a way I'm going to go back through the whole thing and pick a light source and then blend everything into something pretty. I will update tomorrow.

Stupid Computers

October 23, Tuesday 2:40pm

I tried to start making my project in color and the computer wouldn't let me. And then it wouldn't let me use my tablet. And THEN it wouldn't let me use the keyboard. Since there's a presentation about to happen, I'm going to be done until I get home.
I'm not sure if I want to pick a different title, although I don't mind that the title is obvious. And I'm going to put an end screen as well. And after I do all that stuff, I'm going to add the sounds and edit everything and all that good stuff. I'm thinking about recording a couple of the sounds on my own only because I don't like the ones on the internet.

To use color or to not use color?

October 23, Tuesday 2:15pm

Alright so I finished my animation midterm really early surprisingly and I have all Thursday and all weekend so I'm thinking about putting color in my animation but I'm not sure yet. I need something to do for the next few days so.... I think I probably will. This is just me rambling..

Update!

October 22, Monday 8:33pm

I actually got to work on my animation!! Woohoo! I just finished her pulling the balloon out of her pocket, and now I'm going to work on bringing the balloon to her face so I can start having her blow air into it. So I'm almost done I feel like, because her gently falling down is going to be tweened so I don't think it will take very long. Although I am going to put in a swinging motion with her whole body so I think I'm going to turn that into a graphic so that as I tween her down the page, her body will be swinging. So I feel like this will be done before the weekend. Although I think I'm going to go back into the beginning and rework it.

Mid-Term Project

October 18, Thursday 2:48pm

I am at about 14 seconds of animation, and I'm at the part where she starts to pull the balloon out of her shirt as she's falling. So I need to animate her blowing up the balloon, and then her falling with the balloon. I think that will probably take many more hours, as making it look like the balloon is actually being blown up is going to be difficult. The final falling part is probably going to be rather time consuming even with tweening. So I'm planning on at least having the balloon blowing up part animated by Tuesday, if I can get to it between the two papers, drawing midterm, and endless collages. But I'm sure I will be able to work on it either tonight or sometime tomorrow during the day. I'm planning on at least getting those papers out of the way tonight so that should leave lots of time for this project.

Also, I haven't really looked into the animation presentation. I've thought about it, I just haven't gone on the internet so I might do that today after I do the papers. I've watched videos in the past about Glen Keane, so I'll probably watch some more tonight.

Animatic

October 16, Tuesday 12:30-2:45pm

Alright so I'm about eleven seconds into the animatic. Or maybe it was near sixteen I can't remember. But either way I'm almost done but I think I want to add a title and maybe an end with text. I'm not sure yet. But it's looking alright. I'm mad that when my super hero animation was presented today that Robin didn't shape tween into Batman correctly. That annoys me to no end. But otherwise it was good. But my animatic should be done with another thirty minutes or so of work and then I can hunt for sounds. Or make some. I'm thinking about writing the music for it since I have a computer program that will play it for me and I know the basics of music theory after learning to play eight instruments. So that is my update for today! I'll remind myself to do another one if I work on this later. Or tomorrow. Who knows!

Mid-term

October 16, Tuesday 12:33pm

I forgot to post after I did the story board for the mid-term last night. Mostly because I took my medication which makes me fall asleep twenty minutes after I take it. Anyways I did a story board of a little girl and a balloon but I did it really simply so I'm going to redraw it in class.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvR6wuMW6gs&feature=related

Here is my example of an animatic. I feel like such a scatter brain this week. Anyways my story is pretty much a little girl falling off a cliff and blows up like a balloon and floats down like a feather almost. So I'm going to get to work on that.

Dan Sousa

October 9, Tuesday 12:45pm

So Dan Sousa! I am so happy to finally go to a talk about animation instead of something like sculpture or painting! It's not that I don't like those things, it's just that they don't apply to me as much.

Anyways! I'm not sure how I feel about all his work as a whole. I didn't like his film from college, because the camera movements and all the lines were really shaky, and they gave me quite the headache. The line work was nice but it was incredibly shaky. I didn't really like Fable either, but it was more that it was hard to really tell what the story was about for me. The only reason I understood it was because he explained it first. I liked the style of animation but it was very difficult to follow.

I really liked the Minotaur. I really liked what could be done with cutouts and I really enjoyed the story. It was very easy to understand what was going on and the flow was very smooth. My favorite of his animations was Feral. The story was very vivid and the emotions were very clear. I liked this style much better with less line work because it didn't make my head spin looking at it. I feel like the story was animated very well, and I liked getting away from the super painterly style.

Sound Animation

October 7, Sunday 12:00-1:21pm

Alright so my animation is really simple, but I think the sound really helps it and I couldn't think of anything other than a box. So now I have to come up with my idea for the cut out animation, and then do lots of makeup work for 2D... I have no idea what I want to do for the cutout. So, I'm going to ponder it while watching some animation. I might actually look up some cutout animation because I have no ideas at all. Anyways, I'll report back when I figure something out.

Glass Animation

October 6, Saturday 9:40-10:49pm

Alright. I worked on this for over two hours today, I just broke it up. It is finally finished. I'm going to put a hiccup sound in there but I'll probably do that tomorrow. There are a few places that aren't that smooth but I have four layers, and I worked really hard on it. So I'm pretty happy with it. Now I have to figure out what I want to do for the sound animations, and I would like to get that done with the storyboard tonight so that I can dedicate the rest of the weekend to makeup work for other classes. I should have time tomorrow, because that is the lesser extent of my makeup work. I'm reserving Monday for my Drawing I makeup work, because that has the most and I don't have comic legue that day. Anyways! I will report back with what I have done, although I feel like I need sleep :( Maybe I'll just get up early in the morning and do this. Either way I'll be sure to blog about it!

Glass Animation

October 4, Thursday 12:26pm

Alright, so before class I took some reference video in my bathtub for the splashing, but I won't start that until the rest of the animation is complete, as that is on a separate layer. So, I will be doing that once I get everything else finished, which I'm guessing will take up most of my weekend. Along with various makeup work from other classes.

Speaking of makeup work! My makeup work will be in the drop box right after I finish this blog post!

More about the glass

October 2, 2:58pm Tuesday

I think I might change the glass to swaying a little bit, like a tipsy glass, instead of having it jump so much... I don't know very much about drunk people who get drunk when they're with friends haha. Anyways I think that's what I'm going to go with. My story board is different but this idea is better I tell you!

Object Animation

October 2, Tuesday 2:43pm

Alright, so this is mostly so I will remember what my plans are for later. I want to take some reference video for the splashing inside and outside the glass. Probably in the bathtub, so I won't get water everywhere. And then I will put the splashing on the different layers I created. And I'm going to continue working on my animation. So far it's about thirteen seconds, which isn't really that bad. And I finally figured out what I was doing wrong with my computer, so I really am going to turn in my makeup work next class or tomorrow depending on how much time I have. I really hope the tipsy wine glass idea comes across...

Also, unrelated, I made a tumblr for animation. I have never had a tumblr... so yeah.

Okay so I spent all day home sick, but I did manage to finish my storyboard. I'm going to do my text animation, but my computer and audacity don't like each other so I'm going to put sound to them before class starts. And then I'm going to put sounds on the ones I still owe tomorrow after class. Mind you, that is if I go to class tomorrow, I don't feel much better than I did this morning. I'll post another blog post about my text animation.

Story Boards

September 30, Sunday 8:30-10:17pm

So here's the scoop: I have been infected with the viral plague. I am carrying a horrible disease, in my opinion. I have been trying to work on this storyboard since I got up from my nap, but I feel horrible. I don't know if it's going to get done or if my tweens are going to get done. I'm going to try after classes tomorrow (if I go), but I'm not sure. I still have to add sounds to my animations, which I'm planning on doing tomorrow as well.... So I'm sorry. I'm going to try my hardest naturally but it feels like a Rhino is head butting my throat. Hope you like the imagery. I'll report back tomorrow!

Shape Tweening

September 27, Thursday 2:49pm

Alright so I have done a few shape tweens. I have to find some sounds for a few of them. I'm planning on doing at least two more, including a really complicated one. I'm thinking about a really cool word animation with characters as well. For the storyboard homework I'm thinking about doing a wine glass, because I have a cool idea for it. It might be a little too Beauty and the Beast like, but I think it would be really fun to do. I have always loved that movie too much for my own good! I will report back on this and the other sounds that I still have to catch up on!

I also have been reading The Illusion Of Life  and I really like it so far! So I will update again and announce when I have uploaded my animations with sound.

September 23, Sunday 1:46pm

Alright so I found the sounds I want for my animations and downloaded them but couldn't figure out how to put them with them on my own so I will be asking on Tuesday! I also came up with the idea for the shape tween, but I haven't been able to come up with the text animation. I'm going to keep thinking about it while I do other homework, but I can't come up with anything right now which is frustrating. But I will post when I come up with an idea of some kind!

Research Project/ Presentation

September 23, Sunday 1:19pm

Okay, so I would really love to do a research project about Glen Keane and his amazing contributions to character animating. I personally think his work says enough but the actual processes he went through truly inspires me beyond anything else I've even seen.

This link really says it all. He spent so much time to get something so amazing. I think he helped make people believe that animation can be considered fine art instead of just silly little drawings and I aspire to carry on that tradition.

Ben Burtt

September 22, Saturday 8:27pm

I finally got around to listening to the Ben Burtt recording and it was hard to focus on every sound he has made but I feel like I took something important away from it. I feel that I learned that sounds can come from anywhere and it is important to do field recordings and test different things. I think that's very exciting, especially when working on your own individual animations.

I have many ideas for my animations sound wise, but some of the sounds are difficult to describe. I will try any ways.

Flipbook: I would really like to include the squishing sound but I feel as though I need more. I need the splashing sound in the beginning and the falling sound, and maybe even an ominous sound for when the character looks up if I can fit it in there. It's a very short animation so we'll see how much I can fit in there.

Object: For the "fly" or bug or whatever it is, I would like a zooming sound, and then another splat, almost squishing sound for when it hits the wall.

Objects: I would really like for there to be many noises in this one, although I'm not certain how I will get it. I would really like a sound for the hopping of the flea each time it hits the ground and I would also like a sound for when it comes from the top of the screen and falls in the hole again.

Obstacle: For the obstacle animation I would just like a large gulping sound and a licking sound for near the end.

That is all until I report on my makeup work!!

Obstacle Animation

Monday September 17, 8:13pm

Okay, so I thought we only had to come up with an idea for the obstacle animation, not knowing that I had to animate it, otherwise I would have done it Saturday. So I animated a dog eating a hotdog and I think the quality could have been better and the tongue didn't stay the same size but it's not awful. I'm generally harder on myself than most people are, but I wish I had more time. I would have worked on it earlier... But I'm still semi happy with it for what time I did put into it.

Object Animation Complete

September 15, Saturday 4:20pm

Okay that took a lot tell time than I anticipated. I think because it was something as easy as a flee and a hole it took only twenty minutes, but I really think I'm understanding squash and stretch which makes me very happy! So now I'm off to work on my storyboard.

Interacting Object Animation and Storyboard

Saturday September 15, 3:58pm

Due to technical complications during class, I am just starting my interacting object animation. And after I finish that, in a few hours or so hopefully less, I will start on my storyboard. Luckily there are no computer issues on my laptop! I will report back after the animation is done.

Two Objects and One Object Animation(overview.)

September 12th, Wednesday 6:49pm

Ok, so I have an awesome I idea for the two object project. I was thinking a blog that moves like a slinky almost, like that liquid that moves. I can't think of what movie... Oh Flubber! Like Flubber, where he's kind of a solid, kind of a liquid. Well I want him to be sucked down a drain, which will just be like an outline of a hole.

My one object animation went very well I feel, although it looks like a much slower bug than a fly. Maybe I could play it off as a bee, or a massive fly like they have in Japan, because those don't move quickly at all. It's not incredibly slow or anything, I just feel like it could be faster if I picked up the frame rate of took out some frames. But I'm actually so happy with it that I would much rather name it a different bug.

So I am going to go sketch out my two objects, so I can bring it in and show it off tomorrow for you to see in class. I really like the idea, so I will get right on it and then dreaded Art History homework. Although I have to say, I kept singing songs from the animated movie Prince of Egypt because she was talking about Egypt and I don't even care that's it's the completely wrong time period in Egypt! That was my little animation thought yesterday before animation even began.

Class Post: Object1

September 11, Tuesday 1:46pm

My fly looks pretty awesome. I don't want to toot my own horn here, but I'm pretty proud. I might add something cool to the end, just to give it a little wow factor or something. I have to go back and work some of the animation in the middle a little bit but otherwise I think it looks pretty good! Not that I would say it out loud. I had the fly hit the wall and slide down in the end actually. It looked pretty awesome but it looks more like another kind of flying bug than a fly. It's not quite fast enough to be a fly. We also learned about the twelve principles of animation. I'm going to look for any example right now to post on openclass so that I don't forget later. I think Jessica Rabbit would be perfect for appeal though. We'll see if she comes up when I google it.

Flip Book 2

September 11, Tuesday 12:39pm

Alright so last night actually only took until 8:49pm. I know that Richard Williams is against listening to music while you animate but it made it go by so much faster. I was very excited that the actual squishing of the little girl looked better, but I still can't get the shoe to be the same size. Curses! It does look pretty good in my opinion though, although the light table makes the drawings look a little less authentic and almost changes the drawing style. I'm proud of my fluent squishing though!

Flip Book #2

I will be working on this flipbook probably all night. I'm in the Hardy building and will probably be here for awhile. I'm on frame 24, and I know the flash animation looks a lot better, which frustrates me. Oh and it is Monday September 10, 7:58pm

Flash Animation

Saturday September 8th, 2:30-4:30pm

Ok so it only took me two hours to finish the last frames of my flash animation. I really like it, except no matter how hard I try I can't get the shoe to be the same size and that was what I did for most of the two hours I was working on. So now I just have to work on the other flipbook and figure out what objects to do for next class. I'm really leaning towards the fly because I really like drawing them for some reason. I don't know what else I'm going to do yet but I'll keep thinking about it. Anyways I'm very glad that my flash animation is done and I'm happy with the quality. Well I'm sure I will be until I see the other students. That's generally the case.

Reading Pages 35-69

Friday, September 7th 7:30-7:50pm.

I read the chapter, and I agree with him that timing is everything. I do like the use of key frames, because I feel like it would make it far easier to animate. I don't exactly like the concept of "inbetweeners." I understand that they have their place in animation, and it helps expedite things but I feel like it takes out some of the magic from the animation. I know that's probably how I'll start off, as one of them but I really think that animation would have more character without them. It would take much longer to produce an animation but it would be better, at least in my opinion.

Anyways, I really liked the reading. I feel like it breaks down the successful combination of going with the flow and doing key poses. I would like to try some of the techniques. Well after Studio Forum homework and the event I will continue to work on my flash animation.

Extra Random...

Also, not class related: I watched The Thief and the Cobbler again. I love Richard Williams. That is all! :)

Class 2 Update

September 4th, Tuesday 2:51pm

So I worked until 1am last night and my pen ran out of ink so I got up early and found a pen and continued to work on it. I barely finished between art history and this class and I have never freaked out so much in my life. I always get things done early! The critique made me very nervous. They always make me feel like I'm going to throw up. I worked really hard on it, and there were a few shaky parts but I was relieved that some nice things were said, especially since I was feeling really anxious about it. I feel like I learned a lot about how I over complicate things so I'm going to try to get the next one done by next class since I feel more confident about it. I was also excited when my light box was mentioned, since I felt kind of proud of that ugly thing. I also liked the compliment on my fly zoetrope and my ninja one. I am looking forward to making my squished girl flip book work and I'm also going to be a nerd and put my first flip book on youtube. I will link it when I re-update.

Flip book continued 3

September 3rd, Monday 7:41 pm

So I am on frame 62 now of the predraw. I have been very distracted, so it will be a long night for me. I feel the homestretch of it coming, and I saved some work by myself by doing the most important part all out.... But I will have to go back with pen anyways so.. Very long night ahead.

Flip Book Continued 2

Sunday September 2nd 6:40pm

I feel like I update too much but it helps me feel on track. After the creation of my light box, I have gone from 7 to 40 frames in about an hour. The drawings are just rough sketches so I can get a feel for how it's going to play out. I'm then going to make them all detailed and then ink them. SO! 40 down, 58 more to go! And then I have to go back to them all! But I have plenty of music so it's going by quickly!

Flip book continued

September 2nd, Sunday 5:25

I made my own light box, so if I want very similar frames it will go more quickly. I used glass from a picture frame, a cardboard box and a lamp. It works!!! I'm only on frame 7 buy it took me awhile to make it. Hello a whole night of work! But it actually makes me really happy!

First Flip Book

September 2, Sunday 1pm

I haven't attempted to make a flipbook in years. Probably not since I was eleven or twelve. And I feel like it's very daunting, because this is the only class I want to prove myself in. I don't want to prove that I can do this to my teacher or relatives. I want to prove it to me. I went on youtube to look at other people's flipbooks. I have a general idea of what I want to do, but I always make things too complicated. I'm also worried that my idea will make it too personal because it's so close to my heart and so close to who I am right now. I know I can make it look great but with only two days to work on it and I'm nervous about it. I probably think too much, my best friend says I always do. I'm going to look at a few more videos and then maybe start on the flipbook. I'll report back to this blog!

Reading Pages 1-34!

August 30th, Thursday 8:00-8:45pm

I bought The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams over a year ago, before I knew about this class or that I would be attending this college. I felt very lucky that I didn't have to go out and buy a book let me tell you! I bought this book because I did animated stop motion shorts for my high school senior project, my first serious attempt at animation. I didn't know a single person who knew something about animation, so I bought this book. Rereading this reminded me of so many things. I feel like the beginning is a little discouraging to many artists, but I really do love Richard Williams, and his advice. My favorite of his is The Thief and the Cobbler which is not what he is known for, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I feel in love with the movie when I was eleven or twelve.

I actually, after reading him go through some history of animation itself, went on youtube and watched The Skeleton Dance, which I have not watched in a very long time if at all. It reminded me of the extreme work it takes to animate even a five minute animation sequence. I read through the comments and laughed at how many people, who in my opinion couldn't have been animators, reamed the animation. I couldn't help but wonder if they thought they could do better.

The book and the animations reminded me of the difficulties of animating and the importance of drawing that I have long gawked at. I have taken summer drawing classes at other colleges, and it reminds me why I need more practice. I dread Drawing I, but it reminds me why I'm taking it. To become an amazing animator.

First Blog Post

August 30th, Thursday 12:30-3:30pm

Today is my first day of animation class and we created Zoetropes. I have never even thought about doing this before. I tried with flip books, unsuccessfully but I feel like this is a simpler way to start learning. I feel like I learned how to move a simple image easily, and I got really excited. I've only ever done stop motion so far successfully. So, I made 3 Zoetropes so far today. One is of a bouncing ball, on is a fly, roaming around, and the last one is a square guy moving his feet up and down. I still have to ink the last one, which isn't so bad. I'm really excited to get whatever homework we have!

I also feel like I did really well, which surprised me. I've tried animation many times over the years and was always inherently bad at it. But I did really well with the simple images. I do feel the Zoetrope with the fly was a little hard to see, but it did get my general idea of the movement across so I'm not unhappy with it.
